🌿 Bloated? Gassy? Here’s What I Recommend as 🌿 Bloated? Gassy? Here’s What I Recommend as an MD + Herbalist 🌿

Gas and bloating aren’t just annoying — they’re signs your gut (and maybe hormones) need support. Thankfully, herbal medicine offers time-tested, evidence-backed relief.

Here are 5 of my go-to herbs for gas, bloating, and sluggish digestion:

✨ Ginger
A powerful carminative and prokinetic, ginger increases gastric motility, stimulates bile, and reduces gut inflammation and spasms. Clinical trials confirm it relieves indigestion and bloating. Try tea or chew slices before meals.

✨ Fennel Seed
Rich in volatile oils like anethole, fennel relaxes intestinal muscles, reduces gas, and eases cramps. It also acts as a mild phytoestrogen—supporting estrogen balance when the estrobolome is disrupted.

✨ Chamomile
This nervine herb contains apigenin and bisabolol, compounds that reduce gut inflammation and spasms. Chamomile is ideal when bloating is triggered by stress or menstrual hormone shifts.

✨ Peppermint
Peppermint oil contains menthol, which blocks calcium channels in intestinal smooth muscle—leading to relaxation and relief of gas, pain, and distension. Enteric-coated capsules are best for lower GI symptoms like IBS.

✨ Herbal Bitters
Bitters stimulate bitter receptors in your gut, triggering a cascade of digestive juices and bile:
Dandelion supports liver detox + bile flow
Angelica improves gut motility + enzyme output
Artichoke enhances fat digestion + reduces post-meal bloating

🧠 Clinical pearl: If you’re bloated and your estrogen feels off, your gut might be involved. These herbs help regulate estrogen metabolism by supporting the gut-liver-hormone axis and your estrobolome.

🌿 These aren’t just symptom fixes—they help reset the root. Want to learn more? I’ve got a complete gut healing protocol for you in my 📖 Hormone Intelligence!

Do you get gas or bloating? Is it hormone? Stress? Foods? Drop your comments and questions for me👇

Have you heard of inflammaging? It’s not just a Have you heard of inflammaging? It’s not just a wellness buzzword—it’s a real, measurable process that plays a major role in how we age, how our hormones behave, and how we feel in perimenopause and beyond. It’s shaped by chronic stress, processed food, gut disruption, and environmental exposures—and it often goes unnoticed until symptoms speak up.

Fatigue, brain fog, joint pain, hormonal shifts, skin changes, even mood swings—these can all be signs. But the empowering truth? Inflammaging is preventable.

I talk more about this in my book, Hormone Intelligence
And yes, it’s reversible.

Start by reducing sugar, alcohol, and ultra-processed foods. Keep your blood sugar steady. Eat lots of veggies. Hydrate. Support your gut with fiber and fermented foods. Prioritize phytonutrients and omega-3s. Reduce endocrine disruptors. Get gentle movement. Breathe deeply. Rest more.
Want to go deeper? These labs can offer proven, valuable insights:

✔ Hemoglobin A1c
✔ Lipid panel
✔ TSH
✔ B12 or MMA
✔ hsCRP + Homocysteine

I know this can all be overwhelming, but that’s why I’m here! Outside of being an MD specializing in women’s health, midwife & herbalist of 40 years... I’m also a wife, mother, and WOMAN going through menopause, too. So, believe me, I GET IT. I DO THESE THINGS. AND I GET THESE LABS DONE! ☺️

What are your biggest questions or myths you’d love to see busted about inflammation and hormones? Which labs have given you surprising insights? I’d love to know.

Share any questions you have ⤵️ and I’ll meet you in the comments

We’ve been taught that postpartum ends at six we We’ve been taught that postpartum ends at six weeks—that we should be “back to normal,” bouncing back like nothing happened.
But after more than 40 years as a midwife, I can tell you:
Postpartum is forever.

Not in a scary way—in a beautifully human way.
Because birth doesn’t just pass through us.
It reshapes us—body, heart, mind, and spirit.
Once a mama, always a mama.

And that idea of “bouncing back”?
Let’s retire it.
Healing unfolds slowly. Hormones recalibrate. Sleep gradually returns.
And the fog begins to lift. That can take a year or two—sometimes longer.

You’re not failing.
You’re learning. Becoming.

Postpartum depression can show up anytime in those first couple of years. That tells us something, doesn’t it?
Because postpartum isn’t just about the baby.
It’s about you—
Finding your rhythm in a body that feels unfamiliar...
Navigating waves of emotion…
Meeting a version of yourself you’ve never known before.

Decades ago, I started using the term Fourth Trimester to describe the early months after birth—a sacred time that deserves reverence, rest, and real support.
But even that’s not the whole story.
Because the truth is:
There’s no finish line.
You are always postpartum.

Not broken. Not behind. Just in process.

✨ In today’s podcast episode, in honor of Maternal Mental Health month I talk about postpartum depression and postpartum anxiety with @themotherhoodcenter —so that you and any mamas you know, can be more gentle with yourself and find help when it’s needed.

How dare you have thoughts, feelings, opinions and How dare you have thoughts, feelings, opinions and not be afraid to share them! 🙄

The medical model has a lot of terms I dislike. Historically these have included phrases like “incompetent cervix” and “failure to progress in labor” – which put blame on a woman’s body. But the word that bothers me most today appears at the top of EVERY medical chart for every patient in the country. It’s the first thing your doctor sees after seeing your name.

“Chief complaint!”

❌ Words like ‘complaint’ reflect the bias of a system that belittles women. ❌

From the time we’re little girls, we’re taught not to complain, mind our manners, be good, and listen to authority. As grown women, we are likely to convince ourselves that serious symptoms are nothing in order not to complain about it.

... And when we do speak up, when we do say something is wrong, in the medical culture we are more likely to be ignored, condescended to, dismissed, and disregarded than men.

Most of my patients have had some experience of feeling invisible or being treated that way in a medical setting. Millions of women leave medical offices every day without a diagnosis for serious medical conditions because of this phenomenon.

So as a woman, mother, and MD, I am urging you to OWN your inner “bad girl”.

I’m not saying you have to be rude, but I am saying you have to be bold, clear, strong, and assertive, in the medical system and in life. 🙌

Ready to reclaim your body, your voice, and your choices?

✨ Get loud ✨ in the comments below!

And stick around, there’s much to learn and unlearn together. ☺️
