Why Are So Many Women Struggling To Sleep?

Over 60% of women in perimenopause and menopause report disrupted sleep.

Many women experience frustrating sleep disruptions during the menopausal transition, whether it's trouble falling asleep, waking up at night, or being wide awake at 3 a.m. These challenges can arise gradually or seemingly overnight, often affecting those who have previously slept well. They typically result from a combination of physiological, emotional, and lifestyle factors rather than a single cause.

When Sleep Suffers, Everything Suffers

Sleep is not simply a period of rest. It is one of the most important foundations of physical, emotional, cognitive, metabolic, and immune system health.

When sleep becomes disrupted, women often experience far more than fatigue. Mood changes, difficulty concentrating, increased anxiety, diminished resilience, changes in appetite and metabolism, and a reduced sense of wellbeing can all follow.

In clinical practice, sleep concerns are often what bring women through our doors. But what women are experiencing reaches far beyond the hours spent awake at night. Insomnia is a 24-hour problem that affects our work, our relationships, our moods, whether we exercise or eat well – even our fundamental ability to move through daily life feeling like oneself.

Understanding sleep is not simply about helping women get more hours of rest. It's about helping women reclaim an essential aspect of health.

Why Conventional Approaches Often Fall Short

Sleep disruptions during perimenopause and menopause are common, yet many women leave healthcare encounters feeling unheard, unsupported, or simply told that disrupted sleep is something they must learn to live with. But common doesn’t mean ‘normal,’ and women deserve more than symptom suppression or reassurance (or dismissal!) that this is “just menopause.” We deserve thoughtful care that honors the complexity of our physiology, psychology, and lived experience. While hormonal changes can contribute, other factors like circadian rhythm disruptions, stress, metabolic changes, chronic pain, anxiety and mood disorders, and sleep disorders also play a role.

A more holistic approach focuses on understanding the changes in sleep architecture women experience during menopause, the underlying causes of sleep challenges, and then providing individualized care that respects the complexity of women's experiences.

What We'll Explore Together

Sleep disruption during perimenopause and menopause is rarely caused by a single factor. Throughout this course, we'll explore the physiological, psychological, metabolic, hormonal, and lifestyle factors that shape sleep, as well as evidence-informed approaches to help women sleep well again.

Why Women Can't Sleep & Why It Matters

Understand the many factors that can contribute to sleep disruption, including stress physiology, metabolic health, mood, sleep disorders, and more.

Why Sleep Changes During Menopause

What Good Sleep Actually Looks Like

Learn how sleep architecture changes over time, how to distinguish sleep quantity from sleep quality, and what truly restorative sleep requires.

The Science and Practice of CBT-I

Examine the evidence behind Cognitive Behavioral Therapy for Insomnia (CBT-I) and how it can help women break persistent patterns of disrupted sleep.

Lifestyle Medicine for Better Sleep

Discover the role of nutrition, movement, circadian rhythms, stress reduction, and daily habits in supporting healthy sleep.

Integrative Approaches to Supporting Sleep

Explore the thoughtful use of botanicals, supplements, menopausal hormone therapy, conventional treatments, and other evidence-informed approaches to care.

A Truly Integrative Approach

Sleep disruption during perimenopause and menopause is rarely the result of a single cause. Hormones may play a role, but so can stress physiology, metabolic health, sleep disorders, lifestyle factors, emotional well-being, and the many other changes that occur during this stage of life.

Rather than focusing on a single symptom or solution, we'll explore sleep through a broader lens—one that considers the full complexity of women's health and the wide range of tools available to support it.

Let’s make sleep medicine a powerful part of your practice. Help your clients and patients finally rest and restore.

Module 1

The Sleep Crisis in Women

Sleep disruption is one of the most common and overlooked challenges women face during the menopausal transition. We'll begin by exploring the prevalence and impact of sleep disturbances in menopausal women and why understanding sleep is essential to supporting women's physical, emotional, and cognitive wellbeing.

Module 2

What Good Sleep Actually Looks Like

What does restorative sleep really mean? We'll explore sleep architecture, circadian rhythms, sleep quality versus sleep quantity, and how sleep changes across the menopausal transition. Together, we'll build a more nuanced understanding of what healthy sleep looks like and how to assess it.

Module 3

Understanding the Root Causes

Sleep challenges during midlife rarely have a single cause. We'll explore the many factors that influence sleep, including hormonal changes, stress physiology, mood, metabolic health, inflammation, sleep disorders, and the broader context of women's lives and lived experiences.

Module 4

Cognitive Behavioral Therapy for Insomnia (CBT-I)

CBT-I is the gold-standard approach for addressing insomnia. In this module, we'll explore the principles of CBT-I and practical strategies that can help women shift patterns of disrupted sleep, reduce sleep-related anxiety, and build greater resilience.

Module 5

Lifestyle Medicine for Better Sleep Part 1

Daily choices and rhythms have a profound impact on sleep. We'll explore the role of circadian health, movement, light exposure, nutrition, blood sugar regulation, and stress physiology, and how these foundational approaches can support restorative sleep and overall wellbeing.

Module 6

Lifestyle Medicine for Better Sleep Part 2

Sleep is deeply interconnected with emotional health, relationships, and the demands of everyday life. In this module, we'll continue exploring lifestyle and mind-body approaches, including stress reduction, nervous system regulation, emotional resilience, and practical strategies that support sustainable change.

Module 7

Botanicals, Supplements, Menopausal Hormone Therapy and Other Medications for Sleep

An integrative approach means understanding the full range of options available to women. We'll explore the thoughtful use of herbs, nutritional supplements, menopausal hormone therapy, and conventional medications, with an emphasis on evidence-informed, individualized care.

Module 8

Bringing It All Together

No two women experience sleep challenges in exactly the same way. In our final module, we'll integrate what we've learned into a practical framework for understanding and supporting sleep during perimenopause and menopause, helping women approach this phase of life with greater understanding, compassion, and confidence.

Why I Created This Intensive

Like so many women, my own relationship with sleep changed during the menopausal transition. Experiencing the frustration, vulnerability, and uncertainty that sleep disruption can bring deepened my appreciation for what so many women are navigating during this phase of life.

It also reinforced my belief that women deserve care that is nuanced, compassionate, and grounded in the complexity of their lived experiences.

Over the last four decades, I have dedicated my career to helping women navigate life's transitions with greater understanding and support. A Yale-trained physician, midwife, herbalist, and author of 9 books, I’m also the founder of the Women's Integrative & Health and Medicine, through which I’ve trained thousands of women's health professionals worldwide.

My next book, Force of Nature, explores the revolutionary science of menopause and invites women and practitioners alike to reimagine midlife as a time of strength, transformation, and healing.

Through my teaching, writing, and clinical work, I strive to bridge the best of conventional and integrative medicine, helping women and the professionals who care for them navigate health with greater understanding, compassion, and wisdom.
